I am Captain Monica Rambeau

“I am Captain Monica Rambeau” she said, collecting her thoughts before stepping outside. But first, let's go to the beginning… Monica Rambeau was born in 2004. When she was four she was named the girl with the prettiest hair in her small town; she had thick curls and the sunlight bounced off her dark brown hair. Even though her mother put her in tortuous child beauty pageants Monica had different ideas. She always was infatuated with space; maybe it was the way the stars twinkled, or maybe the moon felt like a place she could go to to escape. Either way, she always wanted to become an astronaut.

When she was 18 she joined the army. bad idea! to try and become an astronaut following in her idol's footsteps she joined the Air Force. She hated running, she hated exercise, and she hated rollercoasters, but nothing was going to stop her from achieving her dream. Nothing. One week before earning her captain wings, Monica Rambeau was diagnosed with type one diabetes. She went into DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) and couldn't attend her graduation ceremony. She was in hospital for weeks with her unbearable mother and had to learn how to administer insulin to herself. Even with this calamitous news, nothing was going to stop her from becoming an astronaut.

Captain Monica Rambeau became the first person ever to go to space with type one diabetes. But on her final mission before retiring, Monica went to sleep in her rocket one night and awoke on a different planet the next. She was so disoriented. The planet looked like Mars but had purple rocks. In the sky, she could see Saturn and across from her was a still river of crystal clear water. She was mesmerized. In the distance she could hear a faint voice that called “State your name” Monica replied, “I am Captain Monica Rambeau…
